Extension cords tend to become either floor clutter or tight, twisted coils. Both make the next job harder. A good cord-storage method protects the cable from sharp bends and damage, makes the cord rating easy to identify, and lets you carry the length you need without unraveling every cord in the shop.

Storage does not make an extension cord appropriate for a task. Always follow the cord, equipment, and manufacturer instructions, including ratings, environment, grounding, inspection, and whether a cord must be fully extended during use.

Sort cords by working purpose

Begin by laying out the cords and recording the details printed on their jackets or labels. Useful distinctions include:

  • indoor or outdoor suitability;
  • cord length;
  • conductor gauge and electrical rating;
  • number and type of outlets;
  • grounding configuration;
  • visibility or color; and
  • special features or usage limits stated by the manufacturer.

Do not rely on color alone to determine rating. Labels can fade, so preserve manufacturer markings and add a separate readable identifier if needed.

Remove damaged or questionable cords from normal storage. Cuts, crushed sections, exposed conductors, missing grounding pins, heat damage, loose connections, or makeshift repairs require appropriate evaluation and replacement. Do not hang a damaged cord back with serviceable ones.

Use the over-under method for flexible cords

Consider reels for repeated deployment
