The ceiling appears to be the last empty surface in a crowded garage, which makes overhead storage appealing. But it is not simply another shelf. The load is above people, vehicles, and work areas; garage-door tracks and openers move through the same volume; and the ceiling finish does not reveal what the structure can safely support.
Overhead storage should begin with a conservative plan. Use it for appropriate items, confirm the support and product requirements, preserve all operating clearances, and create a safe way to retrieve what is stored.
Decide whether overhead storage is the right solution
Ceiling storage is best suited to lightweight, bulky, and infrequently used items. Possible examples include empty luggage, lightweight seasonal decorations, folding chairs, or camping equipment, provided the chosen system and structure support them and the items can be secured.
It is usually a poor choice for:
- very heavy objects;
- liquids or containers that may leak;

Ceiling assemblies vary. Trusses, joists, engineered members, finished ceilings, and areas below living space can have different constraints. Drilling or adding load without understanding the structure can cause damage. If the framing, allowable load, utilities, or attachment method is uncertain, consult a qualified contractor or structural professional.

Treat the load rating as a system limit
